Senior Sewage Treatment Plant Operator

The Comox Valley Regional District is seeking a senior sewage treatment plant operator to join our operational services department.
Reporting to the manager of wastewater operations, the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring the work of contractors and treatment plant operators for the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the Comox Valley pollution control centre, pump station and other related equipment and facilities.

Level III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Corix Utilities has an immediate career opportunity for a Level III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in the Victoria area who will organize and supervise the work of employees engaged in the operation of the Dockside Green wastewater treatment plant, and system maintenance. PRIMARY DUTIES
Duties may include, but are limited to, the following:
- Operate and maintain a level 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- Evaluate operations and activities; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports on operation activities.
- Prepare annual operating budget and assist in controlling expenditures.
- Participate in the coordination of staff training.
- Answer questions and provide information to the client; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
- Participate in the full range of wastewater treatment operations, maintenance, and repair duties including performing the most difficult duties assigned to the work.
- Maintain time, material and equipment use records; requisition supplies and materials. Prepare wastewater discharge reports and other monitoring requirements set forth by the permit approval. Perform related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Meets the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties. Knowledge of modern water and wastewater treatment principles, practices, methods and procedures.
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used in a full range of water and wastewater treatment operations, maintenance and repair activities.
- Knowledge of methods and precautions in storing and handling a variety of chemicals.
- Knowledge of functions and purposes of wastewater treatment systems. Principles of personnel supervision, training and evaluation. Safe work practices.
- Ability to operate and maintain state of the art membrane wastewater treatment plant equipment. Perform and interpret standardized process control tests and adjust plant equipment and process appropriately.
- Maintain records and prepare routine reports as required by BC Ministry of Environment.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Proven leadership abilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment plant environments; some exposure to water, chemicals, hazardous materials, and noise; heavy lifting/moving, standing, climbing. May work at heights and in confined spaces.
EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma
- Level III EOCP Wastewater Treatment Plant OR;
- A two-year post-secondary diploma in a Water/Wastewater Quality Technology related program
- Experience with Zenon membrane technology a definite asset
- Valid First Aid Level I Certificate
- Experience with Natural Gas and GeoExchange a definite asset
- Knowledge and experience in Laboratory Procedures required
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written skills
SPECIAL SKILLS/EQUIPMENT
- Good mechanical aptitude
- BC Driver’s license
- Chlorine Handling certification would be preferred
- Training in confined space operations will be provided
- Knowledge of provisions of WHMIS procedures
- Ability to maintain logs as required using MS Word and MS Excel and to communicate via email using MS Outlook
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Physically fit, with handling objects up to 30kg required routinely
- Must be able to walk/stand for long periods of time

Operational Leadhand
Location: Strathmore, AB

Class: 5550
One Permanent Position
EPCOR Water Services is seeking a leader with a strong service orientation, a safe work record and the ability to lead others as an Operational Leadhand. As a Leadhand, you will ensure results through supervision, coordination and execution of operations by overseeing and undertaking the work of staff, equipment operators and sub-contractors by doing standard water distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance and repairs in Strathmore.
Crew duties will include hydrant inspections and repairs, main sewer line flushing, valve inspection and repair, manhole inspection and cleaning, catchbasin cleaning, unidirectional flushing of the water distribution system, servicing of liftstations, pumps and wetwells as well as equipment servicing and maintenance. In addition, day-to-day operational duties standard in a water and wastewater utility may be assigned as required. The crew will be responsible to complete this work for EPCOR operated sites within Southern Alberta. As a result, travel is a regular part of this position. Please note – overtime, weekend and out of town work will be required and you must live within a 30 minute response time to Strathmore. The successful candidates must also participate in the on-call rotation system.
Qualified candidates will possess Grade 12 or G.E.D. and must have at least three years of progressively experience in water distribution and/or wastewater collection and demonstrated supervisory skills. Experience with MS Office Suite and computers are a strong asset. An Alberta Environment Operator certification Level II Water Distribution and Level II Wastewater Collection is required for this position. As this is a leadership position, candidates must have demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, coaching skills, customer responsiveness, planning and organizing, initiative and decision making/judgment skills. A valid Class 5 License and an acceptable driver’s abstract are required. You must have mechanical aptitude, be in good physical health to meet the demands of the position and have an exceptional safety record with a “safety first” orientation to plan and carry out the work safely and efficiently.
Hours of Work: 8.0 hours per day, 40.0 hours per week
Rate of Pay: $27.30 - $30.73 per hour (salary is dependent on the number of points and certifications as per the Appendix III, IBEW Schedule of Wages).

As a member of the team, duties would be varied and involve the maintenance, inspection and repairs of facilities and infrastructures in the southern Alberta region and specifically in Chestermere. A significant element of responsibility would be the servicing of infrastructure in wastewater collection systems, water distribution systems, and storm water systems.
Qualified candidates are grade 12 graduates, who have related experience in the water distribution and wastewater collection fields including Alberta Environment Level II in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection.
