JAMES Pollution Control Centre
The James ( Joint Abbotsford Mission Environmental Control System ) is located in Abbotsford, BC and was
constructed in 1981.
FLOW:
Design - 12 mgd expanding to 24 mgd (1996)
Peak dry weather - 18 mgd expanding to 30 mgd (1996)
Peak wet weather - 24 mgd expanding to 40 mgd (1996)
PLANT LOADING:
Average influent BOD - 350 mg/l
Average influent suspended solids - 350 mg/l
Average daily flow - 34,000 cubic meters
SERVICE AREA & POPULATION: JAMES services the new City of Abbotsford (amalgamated Districts
of Abbotsford and Matsqui) and the District of Matsqui. Anticipated to join in 1996 will be the areas of Aldergrove
(Eastern Langley) and the City of Sumas, Washington. The present population equivalency of domestic
and industrial waste to JAMES is 120,000.
TREATMENT UNITS: Influent pumping station; 2 fine bar screens; 2 parshall flumes; 2 aerated grit tanks;
3 primary clarifiers; 1 secondary pumping station; 1 trickling filter/solids contact unit (adding 1 more unit in
1996); 2 secondary clarifiers; 1 chlorine contact tank; 1 effluent pumping station; 2 anaerobic digesters;
2 belt filter presses c/w polymer feed system; 1 methane co-generation unit; 1 standby unit.
SLUDGE TREATMENT & DISPOSAL: Presently sludge is dewatered and used as a top dressing
at the landfill site. Excess dewated sludge is stored at the landfill site.
COMPUTER CONTROL: Computers are used to maintain daily operational and laboratory records,
wordprocessing, on-line data and process control. Computerized process control will be expanded during the
1996 plant expansion to include all of the secondary and a major portion of the primary treatment process.
PLANT OPERATIONS: Presently JAMES is operated on a Monday to Friday basis with a standby duty
operator attending the plant on Saturday and Sunday for two hours each day for inspections. During 1996 the
operations will be expanded to a 7 day / 8 hours per day operation due to the increased size of the plant.
PLANT STAFF: JAMES has 8 full time staff including 6 O&M, 1 lab technician and 1 management
staff. In 1996, staffing will be expanded to include 1 receptionist/clerk/typist and 1 part time O&M.
CERTIFICATION STAFF: All plant staff arecertified in wastewater treatment and/or wastewater collection.
PLANT CLASSIFICATION: JAMES is classified as a Level IV plant.
